ATL: Groton's Bowie at BCANY, Lansing Coach's Milestone

Groton rising senior Canaan Bowie again was on the roster for the BCANY Summer Hoops Festival, held Aug. 4 through 6 in Johnson City at Johnson City Schools. The boys tournament is comprised of 10 regional teams; Bowie was a part of the Southern Tier squad. He also participated in clinics with college basketball coaches and learned about the college recruitment process. Bowie was joined on the squad by three players from Owego; two each from Seton Catholic, Maine Endwell and Elmira; and one each from Horseheads and Unadilla Valley. The team lost to Rochester, 56-54; Hudson Valley, 70-59, The Central boys team (Section III and X) won the tournament this season with a popular name on its roster. Buddy Boeheim, son of Syracuse men’s basketball coach Jim Boeheim, played on the squad that defeated Buffalo, 95-58. Jamie, Jim’s daughter and Buddy’s twin sister, played on the girls Central team. A group of Southern Tier girls have another accolade to add to their resumes after defeating Rochester, 58-48, for the tournament title. The team led 26-25 at half. It was the first BCANY Summer Hoops title for Southern Tier. Four of the 12 players on the girls Southern Tier team already have state titles to their name: Susquehanna Valley’s Holly Manchester, Seton Catholic Central’s Marina Maerkl and Julia Hauer, and Watkins Glen’s Mariah Gonzalez.
Lansing’s Randy Randall reached a significant coaching milestone Sunday, Aug. 6 on the Lansing Ball Fields. Randall, a 33-year head coach, earned wins No. 800, 801 and 802 while coaching and playing in the Lansing Recreation adult softball league. The longtime Lansing coach started his career in 1984 with the Woodshed Women’s Softball team, staying there until 1999. He started coaching at Lansing in 1985 as the varsity wrestling coach, keeping the position until ’89, and continuing by starting and directing the Lansing Youth Wrestling program for 20 years. Randall also coached the modified, junior varsity and varsity wrestling and softball teams for a number of years before going across the lake to coach the Trumansburg varsity softball team with then-coach Chris O’hara. He, of course, returned to Lansing. He’s also coached volleyball and baseball at the youth level. Randall gives all the credit to Lansing Parks and Recreation director Steve Colt, Lansing Central School District and the athletes and their families for their confidence in his coaching abilities and certainly all the wonderful memories that come with coaching.
